"SUMOFUS" : MONSANTO.

Good news! The European Commission couldn’t garner a majority and delayed the vote on its proposal regarding endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). We are encouraged by this first victory to give an extra push.

Help us mobilise to prevent big chemical corporations like Monsanto from winning the battle.

Good news !

A month ago, the European Commission gave up on putting to the vote its regulatory proposal on endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Despite all the tricks it pulled, it was unable to garner a majority and chose to delay the vote.

This first victory is a direct result of you taking action !

More than 280,000 SumOfUs members signed the petition asking the Commission not to give in to Monsanto or Bayer’s lobbying pressure. Mainstream media outlets like Le Monde and Libération in France have cited the petition, keeping the topic hot.

Together with the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) and the EDC-Free Europe coalition, we managed to convince many Member States to back away from supporting the proposal, an extremely dangerous one for Europeans.

We can’t stop here. The text should be put to the vote in the coming weeks. Let’s organise to prevent it from being adopted !

The criteria proposed by the European Commission doesn’t come close to taking EDCs seriously as a major public health issue. And yet thousands of studies have linked EDC exposure to increases in serious medical problems like infertility, cancer and neurological disorders.

But instead of firmly restricting their use, the European Commission, under pressure from Big Chem, proposed far too flexible a text.

Scientists and NGOs point out the impossibly high burden of proof required to remove EDCs from the market.

The governments of France, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, and Finland have heard us out and voted against the proposal. Others abstained. Belgium, which SumOfUs members called out on social media after it had been initially favourable to the Commission’s text, also ended up rejecting part of the text.

By applying constant pressure on the governments of Member States, we will end up convincing the European Commission to draft regulations that will actually limit risks for our health and environment.

Thanks for all that you do,

Nabil, Fatah, Marie and the whole SumOfUs team
